I get asked a lot of times how I always get to combine my clothing to achieve a classy and atemporal look. I personally don't find that I dress in any special way: it's just the way I am. I like classical cuts, darts that help put everything right in place and materials that enhance my shape. But, if there's something that might be very characteristical on my fashion view might be adding a vintage, old piece or something new but antique-inspired to almost any outfit I might put on. I realized that since I started thrift-shopping and discovering little by little the bast world of vintage clothing my outfits and view to my daily wear changed drastically. I know that some people might be a bit reluctant to step into a shop that might smell funny (I promise that once you get used to it, it doesn't at all) or who might find nasty to wear clothes that once belonged to anyone else. 

So, in today's post, I would like to show you some ideas to all of you who are thinking of adding (maybe for the first time) a vintage piece of clothing (or maybe an accessory) to your closet. These are my 10 statement vintage pieces to have in your closet.

#4 THAT vintage coat to spend the coldest Winters wrapped in

I don't know in other places but, in my city's vintage, thrift stores and second-hand shops are pretty easy to find anything from Levi's to Lee jeans from 80's-90's era. Cropped, washed, longer, shorter... I have even convinced some of my friends who are not very into fashion or vintage to try on a pair of those and they loved it! There's something very neutral and classy going on in the colors, shapes, and cut of these jeans which are very rare nowadays... And they're usually half the price of a brand news!

No-one needs an explanation on this one! Fur coats, vests, hats or hairpieces of any shape and color are a nice addition to your wardrobe anytime they're in great condition and feel as warm and fluffy as possible.

If you've been reading Something Fashion for a while, you might know I LOOVEE spicing up my outfits with cute hats. I think they add a lot of personality and a very unique touch to any outfit. Hats also have the ability of helping us stay warmer on the coldest Winter evening, whilst provide us shadow on the warmest Summer. If anything, hats are amazing accessories.

Right after having one of the sunniest Easter weeks here in Valencia I'm able to remember, weather has suddenly turned upside down and we've been immersed in an unexpected Winter 2.0. Having already packed away all our coats at home, I've had to make a bit of improvisation when coming out home for a morning stroll without freezing to death. That's when I realized I stored a huge collection of wool berets and beanies on a box in my closet, among other little accessories like gloves or belts that come in handy when needed.

So, for those of you who would love to sport a beret on your go-to outfits, here I've gathered 5 tips on how to wear your beret on a super casual, french style:

#1 Wear it to the side to achieve a relaxed look

There's nothing like having a bad-hair day and putting a beret on. Whether you want to accentuate the messy mood (or not so much), you might play with colors and patterns on your beret. The beret to the side can also be worn with your hair tied up on a low ponytail or side braid to achieve a sleeker and more polished look. Just play with it!

#2 Wool monochromatic berets are classy and timeless

If you want to achieve that classic french styled outfit inspired on a walk through the Seine at Paris, choose a monochromatic beret, specially black, grey or red! Talking about loose hair and relaxed looks, I also been collecting colorful crochet berets which are perfect for Spring or colder Summer nights due to the thinner threads and materials they've been made. These are also great for College or High School if you want to accessorize a little bit without overdoing it. Get your beret to match your outfit colors or, on the contrary, play with colors and textures and make it stand out.

I might have many different kinds, shapes and styles of hats but berets are great and comfortable, specially when traveling and packing your outfits on a tight suitcase. Their flat and super thin shape is marvelous! I would suggest you to invest on a beret made of natural wool or if you're looking for fancy colors, invest on a beret made of a nice quality knit. Otherwise, it will itch once wearing it, and believe me: it's not a pleasant feeling, and it mustn't' be good for your forehead's skin either. 

Even for the tiniest family event, I always feel like I have to dress the part. We shot this pictures in late March, on a very sunny morning going to my grandparents' for family lunch. Just my parents, grandma and great aunt on the table. Some might think it's a bit overdone, but for me, playing dressup is an everyday indulge. Every event and daily situation requires its own approach when it comes to fashion, always staying true to ourselves and following our own sense of style.

One of the questions I hear the most is, "why the heck you come so dressed up to university, even if you are just going to deal with a pair of presentations and you'll be seated the greatest part of the day working in your desk?". Well, is the way I choose to say out loud who I am without shouting. For me, wearing a pair of kitten heels to class is how I boost self-confidence to approach every situation the daily routine may keep. My lips covered in red lipstick help me articulate words when I'm in front of my classmates trying to explain why I choose to use concrete instead of wood, or why being involved as a student representative is such an important role. I might even feel more comfortable wearing a sleek suit than my sportswear (well. Not my white fencing equipment. That is something I wouldn't change, EVER).

Fashion is the language I choose to track inspiration. I do not pretend to impose my sense of style to anyone, nor do I pretend it is imposed to me. Fashion helps us gain inspiration from our surroundings, embrace our culture and the marvelous elements it has to offer us and also, inspire and give ideas to relatives and friends when in need of advice. There's nothing more touching than a friend who asks for my fashion advice for her prom day. It makes me feel that my opinion into the matter counts, and that they really trust me for the task.

So, whenever you're having a super casual family event, dress the part with your truest self as I did here. Embrace your favorite pieces and rock them in the streets. Here I wore a pair of earrings which are typical from Extremadura (I bought them in Mérida. Remember my adventures around there?) and an asymmetric black dress which my grandma wasn't very fond of, as she hates it when I'm not wearing bright colors as she did on her twenties. 

Vintage shopping is somehow tricky. You must see further than the piece you are getting, and foremost, be ready for the unexpected. You might not find that dress for New Year's Eve you have been looking for but, instead, find an ah-wesome two piece suit that may be ready for you to wear on that event. You must be open-minded and be ready to do a pair of fixes and customizations for your new vintage garment to be ready. That's what we did with this lovely 70's-80's dress-coat from La Sra Henderson vintage shop, which has a detachable neck you can lace up and which we got all wrinkled, with two huge buttons which didn't match at all the coat style and with the linen stretching all the outer fabric. Not a mess at all: I've seen worse, but as I said, it was a piece full of opportunities.

So. Once we were at home, mum and I decided the best we could do to this vintage white coat was to put it on a hanger, iron it and lastly, get a pair of new buttons and replace them. I wish I had taken some pictures of it before the whole revamping process for you to see the differences between both. But it's OK, I think. You'll have to trust me and have a bit of faith when I'm telling you how the piece was originally. Just a bit of imagination, as everything related to fashion and design is.

Fashion is about imagination, about having vision and looking further than what you have in front of you. I always encourage people to see the many possibilities of a garment, the lots (billions, zillions) of possible combinations you can make by playing with different shapes, textures and colors. Vintage is for me the ultimate way of playing with fashion, and a way to express ourselves as legit as sculpture, painting, music or photography. By just changing a pair of buttons, I add a tiny bit of my personality to an unique piece. Others might design a garment from scratch, but for me, vintage is the key and as odd as it may sound, the future of fashion.

Haven't you ever felt like you'd need a 72-hours day to accomplish everything you should be doing in just one regular, working day? That's me, currently. I must say that I've been like this since I started University, but in the last two years I just feel like I can't handle everything I'm up to. First, I was just looking for the feeling of belonging to something. Helping others. Joining and participating in exciting projects, activities and groups. And still manage to practise fencing, go out, keep up with the blog and of course, accomplish all the due dates with projects and homework. Impossible.

I feel like I've just got to the point when I'm absolutely overwhelmed and I'm not able just to accomplish everything I'm supposed to do, but not even half of the tasks I've planned for the day. My mind has just said "STOP IT", and my body is about to, soon. I still try to manage everything, and be consequent to the decisions I made in the past, to accomplish some promises I made to friends and work groups, but I'm just trying to take it as easy as I can or I'll turn nuts.

If you've been reading and knowing me for some time, you must know I'm a travel lover. Since I started studying Architecture I knew I didn't want to go outside Spain to finish the degree, but now things have changed a little, and the need of fresh air and taking a much needed time for myself has led me to the decision of leaving for an Erasmus scholarship next year. That adds a little bit of stress about the overwhelming routine I'm currently living in, as I enrolled an intensive course to get an advanced English degree by the start of December. If everything goes as planned, I'll be asking for a place at TU Delft, Netherlands (no need of Dutch by the moment, but I find very interesting to learn it too... Maybe if I get accepted there!) so I can finish my 5th year there and breathe some fresh air. Meet new people. Keep up with fencing, which I had to leave behind because of time lack. Learn new ways to approach architecture, design and fashion.

Although I'm already exhausted because of the times and routines I'm currently taking (and it's hardly mid October!), I'm super excited of having something to fight for and focus on this new course, as I feel like it was a very long time ago the last time I had the will of doing something as huge as this. Everyone who has taken an Erasmus always end up telling me how great and life changing the experience was, and I want to feel that as well.

Half of my closet is made out of vintage, second hand or thrifted items. Now that I'm partially back as I'm mostly finished with exams, tasks and projects, I've taken this weekend as two days not exactly of vacation, but two days of pure break to come back to reality, organise my bedroom which I left on chaos and rescue some non-architectural projects I had on stand-by mode. Thanks to that I discovered that I keep tons of clothes I rarely wear, and most of them are vintage or come from second hand, as this blue poplin dress which I bought at La Señora Henderson.

That put me on a meditation mode on why I like so much wearing and buying vintage clothes. If you've been reading Something Fashion for awhile, you might already know that vintage is one of the main pillars at this fashion blog among young designers and street style made in Valencia. I still remember one of the first vintage pieces I ever bought, which was this black handbag from an online store called "Gelolas". Now my closet is full of hand sewn, thick jersey cotton dresses and bags from all shapes, colors and materials. But, why do I (and the rest of the world should) consume so much vintage? Here are some of the reasons running on my mind about the topic:

I get asked all the time how being quite a shy girl I have the guts of posing in front of a camera and just share with the world what I wear. Even if it's a bit weird, old-fashioned or just different from what is expected on a 22 year old girl. You know, sometimes a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do, and starting this blog was a way not only to get off most of my shyness, but also try to give a boost of self-confidence to all who didn't think they would be brave enough, not only to go outside rocking their unique looks, but also to prove them they could be brave enough to do whatever they wanted. To encourage everyone to go out of their boxes and show themselves to the world. If I could do it, sure anyone could do it.

So, time to wear this long-forgotten vintage ruffle dress that was kept on my wardrobe for years until now. Classy and full of vintage vibes, it was a total challenge to pair it with something modern enough to not look like granny but which suited it and helped the whole outfit to be in the same page. I finally took this geometric pastel bomber from H&M and the Bimba & Lola pink sunnies to add some "pink lady" vibes. I think it turned out pretty interesting and fun!

If you've been following my steps through social media (particularly Instagram) and around here, you might know we're in the middle of the Architecture School festival organization this coming week (we've been working a lot for the past 6 months to get it all arranged and running nicely!). Sort of a Coachella for Architecture students, architects and everyone who'd like to join around Valencia, which is called ETSA·TOPIA and will be tons of fun for sure. I'm so excited! It's been hard to combine everything from homework, to collaborations and work I'm currently involved at, and of course the festival details where I've been also collaborating. I've had my up and downs during this last weeks and especially these last days, but now I'm back with all the energy in the world to keep moving!

I don't know about those attending Fashion Weeks these past days, but I think I can relate to them in terms of running late everywhere. I'm not really sure if I would change my daily routine for those bloggers (or models) working at catwalks, but if there's something I'm 100% certain of is that we both wish our days had 30 hours a day.

As I said on previous posts, I got involved on every activity, every group, every possible thing available to do at College and that means there are days when you must attend 3 meetings at the same time. It's very fulfilling, you get to know tons of new and nice people, but sometimes it drives you crazy.

Last Thursday, for example, I organised an "Students 4 Students workshop" at the Architecture School, where a bunch of friends and classmates teach other students at the School some software tips and basically we give advice on architecture stuff. Sort of a masterclass, but managed by the students. I'm the one in charge of organising calendars and times, search for those who will teach, go up and down the whole building if our laptops don't work, and basically control that everything goes perfectly by the time the class ends. That's why I like to be there while the speech goes on. Unless, you are bound to attend a compulsory meeting at the same time, and be elsewhere 1 hour after that!

That's the reason why sometimes, you must to get ready very early in the morning having no idea what places, or what activities you will be facing during the day. Sometimes I don't even have any idea how late I will be getting back home. That's why I always chose super versatile outfits, mostly wearing jeans and layered blouses, jackets and coats. A big backpack or bag is very useful to carry everything from laptop to scarves if there's a drastic temperature change during the day. And a pair of comfy, bright, low heeled booties like those from Bimba y Lola are my go-to essentials.
